1st pic top left- RING OF THORN

The victim would be hooked into a neck device, either made of metal or wood, which prevented the victim from adjusting into a comfortable position. The cruelty of this punishment lie within the fact that they were unable to lie down, eat, or lower their head for days!


2nd pic top right- SPANISH DONKEY

A form of execution and torture, the naked victim is placed on a wooden v-shaped saddle and cannon balls are shackled to his feet, gradually tearing him in half. 


3rd pic mid-left- HERETICS FORK

The victim’s hands were tied behind his back while an instrument consisting of two forks are set against each other penetrating the flesh under the chin in one end and the upper chest in the other. The Heretics Fork makes speech and neck movement almost impossible and is used after a confession to avoid hearing the victim any further.


4th pic mid-right- RAT TORTURE

A rat is forced through a victim’s body (usually the intestines) as a way to escape. The victim is completely restrained and tied to any surface. A rat is then placed on his stomach covered by a metallic container. The container is gradually heated and the rat begins to look for a way out – through the victim’s body. Digging a hole usually takes a few hours of agonizing pain and would usually result in death. 


5th pic bottom left- GUILLOTINE

A guillotine is an apparatus used for beheading. It is a tall, upright frame with a weighted and angled blade that is raised to the top and suspended. The condemned person is secured at the bottom of the frame, with his neck held directly below the blade. The blade is then released, to fall swiftly and sever the head from the body. 


6th pic bottom right- GAROTTE

As time went on, the execution method was modified in the form of a wooden chair to which the condemned was bound, while the executioner tightened a metal band around his or her neck with a crank or a wheel until asphyxiation of the condemned person was accomplished.
